Just 15 minutes from the capital, hop on a train, bus or ferry to explore seaside villages, New Zealand’s first organised European settlement. The proximity to Wellington means that the attractions within the region are accessible to all.

Within the Region:

• Rimutaka Cycle Trail. One of New Zealand’s 22 ‘Great Rides’, the track runs alongside the Hutt River from historic Petone to Upper Hutt.
• Walking and hiking trails
• The Dowse Art Museum. An international reputation for providing visitors with free entry to ever changing contemporary exhibition programmes and offering a fine world-class experience into contemporary national and international art and culture.
• Te Puna Wai Ora (the spring of life). A sculpture created by artist Louise Purvis. The tall stack of vessels serves as a marker and is a fountain, water cascades down its curvaceous form and sparkles in the sun. The single vessel on a pedestal has taps around it where you can fill up your bottles with pure artesian water.
• Belmont Regional Park. Includes the historic Korokoro Dam, World War II ammunition stores, the original  coach road walk from Lower Hutt to Porirua and the stunning views from Boulder Hill.
• Hutt River Trail. A gentle cycling or walking trail for everyone from the foot of the Tararua mountains to the sea
• Silver Stream Railway. A vintage steam train that rides along restored track that used to be part of the Wellington to Upper Hutt main line. The collection was started in 1967 and now has more than 15 locomotives and various carriages/trucks, most of which have a connection to the Wellington region.
